Eddy's has over eight years of history serving the gay, lesbian and bisexual community and those who enjoy their company.

It all started in April 1995, when Eddy decided to provide a place for friends to gather. Sure, there were risks - the usual economic risks, and the risk of being the first. The venue was small, on Weihai Road, but it drew standing room only crowds from the beginning.

Word of Shanghai's first gay bar spread quickly, crossing borders and time-zones. By November 1996, it was time to move up. More space, a new character - Eddy's Tree Bar on Yueyang Road. The site had once been a garden, now enclosed, and it came complete with live trees. Add a dance floor, the occasional drag show from Australia and a loyal and growing following - you get the picture. Indoor trees can't last that long though; the site was rife with zoning and structural issues.

On to the next spotĄ In November 1998, Eddy's Country Sounds on Nanjing Road West opened its doors. This had been a small theatre, dating back to the '30s, so it came complete with a stage and just the right atmosphere for all manner of theatrics. Fitted out with traditional Chinese furniture and trappings, the stage attracted those with penchant for Chinese opera and traditional storytelling. Those boys rivaled Mei Lanfang. Lease terms, like all good things, come to an end.

In 2000, it was off to the Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai's modern, gleaming architectural monument. Volume, space, a terrace - windows and steel on the outside, and old Shanghai on the inside. That was Eddy's Focus. Motorola borrowed the space for ads featuring Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok shot some movie scenes here. It was the place to see and be seen. Those pesky leases - this one got pulled for an art gallery. What would be next?

People's Square, of course. Eddy's 1924 opened in June 2001, and women who love women swept in. The 30's d¨Ścor matched the building. Small and cozy, this was the place for the weekend party girls. More customers than space, more activity than expected - there were grumblings from various quarters. Time to move on (again).

In April 2002, the doors to eddy's bar on Huaihai Road opened. The women gradually moved on, and the men moved in. Warm and inviting, eddy's bar is the friendly neighborhood bar for people from all corners of the world. The loyal following is a cross-section of modern Shanghai, and guests pour in from other parts of China, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. It's warm, it's red and it's friendly.

No, it's not time to move. But it is time to jazz up the menu, and bring on the champagne. And to say "thanks" to all our customers from around the world for a great decade. eddys - the first in town, and the best. Make it your bar, meet the people who enjoy good eclectic music, the feel of a modern setting and the company of a rainbow crowd.
